The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has formally emphasized the necessity for accounting technicians to integrate advanced digital competencies into their professional skill sets. As emerging technologies redefine the landscape of financial reporting and bookkeeping, the institute is urging new practitioners to prioritize expertise in artificial intelligence, automation, and data analytics.
The Evolution of the Accountancy Profession
During the 64th Accounting Technicians Scheme West Africa (ATSWA) induction ceremony held in Lagos, ICAN Council President and Chairman Hajia Seghosime underscored that the modern accountancy profession is undergoing a rapid transformation. According to Seghosime, professionals who successfully combine foundational technical accounting knowledge with technological adaptability are best positioned to navigate this changing environment.
“We live in an era in which AI, automation, data analytics, sustainability reporting and other emerging technologies are reshaping the accountancy profession at an unprecedented pace,” Seghosime stated during the event.
The ceremony marked the admission of hundreds of new members into the Association of Accounting Technicians West Africa, a body operating under the Association of Accountancy Bodies in West Africa. This induction serves as a critical entry point for those providing essential bookkeeping and financial support services across both public and private sectors.
Integrity and Continued Education
Beyond technical proficiency, ICAN leadership emphasized the ethical obligations inherent in the field. Seghosime noted that while digital and technical skills are essential for career advancement, integrity remains the cornerstone of public trust and long-term professional success.
The institute also highlighted the pathway for these new technicians to further their careers. The Accounting Technicians Scheme (ATS) is structured to provide a professional foundation that allows for a transition into the institute’s professional-level examinations, ultimately leading to the Chartered Accountant designation. Inductees were encouraged to maintain a forward-looking mindset and to pursue ongoing competency upgrades to keep pace with global industry standards.
