Strengthening the Accountancy Sector Through AI Fluency

The Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA) and the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) have launched a collaborative initiative, AIxAccountancy, aimed at integrating artificial intelligence into the professional practices of the nation’s finance and accounting workforce. The program, which represents a significant step in Singapore’s broader digital transformation strategy, seeks to equip professionals with the practical knowledge required to utilize AI tools responsibly and effectively.

The initiative is a cornerstone of the ISCA’s commitment to upskill 60,000 accountancy and corporate finance professionals over the next three years. It marks the first training collaboration between the IMDA and a professional body under the national government’s larger National AI Impact Programme, which maintains an overarching goal of training 100,000 non-technical workers to be “AI bilingual” within the same three-year period.

Strategic Implementation and Institutional Adoption

Early interest in the initiative has been substantial, with more than 20,000 individuals—ranging from private sector employees to tertiary students—registering interest prior to the official launch. The public sector has already signaled strong backing for the program; the Singapore Accountant-General’s Department intends to incorporate AIxAccountancy into the professional development frameworks for all 4,000 of its finance and internal audit officers.

The program structure is designed to be scalable and accessible, utilizing a two-stage curriculum:

  • Foundational Competencies: Participants begin by establishing a baseline understanding of AI technologies.
  • Advanced Applications: Learners progress to more complex implementations of AI within accounting workflows.

The curriculum emphasizes hands-on experience with industry-standard tools, including ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, and Gemini. To ensure long-term relevance, organizers plan to update course materials regularly to reflect evolving industry practices. Furthermore, participants will receive access to AI Nexus, a dedicated resource hub designed for sharing adoption strategies and professional experiences.

Economic and Professional Impact

To facilitate widespread adoption, the program is offered at no cost to ISCA members who are Singapore citizens or permanent residents, as well as students at local tertiary institutions.

Reflecting on the importance of the initiative, ISCA President Lee Boon Teck noted that the program is intended to be more than a simple training course. “AI is reshaping the future of the accountancy profession,” Lee stated. “It is a national profession transformation initiative that equips accountants and finance professionals with the skills and confidence to create greater value for businesses and society.”

By fostering high levels of AI literacy among finance professionals, the partnership between ISCA and IMDA aims to ensure that the accountancy sector remains competitive and capable of leveraging emerging technologies to improve operational efficiency and decision-making processes.
