Autonomous driving technology firm WeRide and ride-hailing giant Uber have announced plans to introduce a commercial robotaxi service in the Greater Zurich Region later this year. The initiative marks the partnership’s first expansion into Switzerland and continues a rapid deployment strategy across European markets.
Regulatory Framework and Operations
The service is being developed in coordination with Switzerland’s Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). According to the companies, the project remains subject to final regulatory clearance. WeRide previously secured a driverless permit from FEDRO in November 2024, which authorizes autonomous vehicle operations on public roads within the Furttal region of Zurich.
Under the proposed operational model, local operator Rydera will oversee day-to-day fleet management. The companies intend to scale the fleet size incrementally as operational targets are achieved, with a long-term goal of transitioning to fully driverless commercial operations in core urban centers.
Strategic Expansion
The Zurich project follows a recently announced rollout in Madrid, Spain, representing the duo’s first joint venture in Europe. Jennifer Li, CFO of WeRide International, highlighted the strategic importance of the region, noting that Zurich’s status as a global business hub makes it a primary market for autonomous mobility.
The Zurich deployment will utilize WeRide’s proprietary technology, specifically the ‘WeRide One’ universal platform and the ‘GENESIS’ simulation software. Sarfraz Maredia, Uber’s global head of autonomous mobility and delivery, stated that the partnership aims to leverage Uber’s operational expertise to integrate autonomous vehicles into the existing ride-hailing ecosystem.
Global Footprint
The collaboration between WeRide and Uber has been active since December 2024. The firms currently operate fully driverless commercial services in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, with additional public operations in Riyadh. The addition of Zurich brings the total number of active deployments to five of the 15 cities covered under the current agreement between the two firms.
The announcement emphasizes a broader trend of technology providers seeking jurisdictions with established regulatory frameworks for autonomous testing. WeRide noted that Switzerland’s specific policies regarding autonomous driving were a key factor in selecting the Greater Zurich Region for this latest commercial expansion.
