Grant Thornton UK has announced the national rollout of Anthropic’s Claude AI model across its workforce, marking a significant step in the professional services firm’s broader digital transformation strategy. The deployment, which began last month and is scheduled for completion by August, will provide access to the AI tool for all partners and employees across the firm’s audit, tax, advisory, and support divisions.

Strategic Investment in AI Integration

This initiative is a core component of Grant Thornton’s £500m ($672m) investment program. The firm aims to leverage artificial intelligence to automate process-heavy, repetitive tasks, thereby allowing staff to dedicate more time to high-value activities such as complex analysis, risk assessment, and client-focused decision-making. By embedding Claude into daily operations, the firm intends to enhance the consistency and depth of its professional output.

According to David Gartside, Chief Digital Officer at Grant Thornton UK, the objective is to move beyond superficial AI adoption. “The firms that win won’t be the ones talking the most about AI,” Gartside stated. “They will be the ones using it so well it barely gets mentioned. This isn’t about AI theatre. It is about changing how work gets done in ways clients can feel.”

Maintaining Professional Judgement

Despite the integration of advanced technology, Grant Thornton emphasizes that the AI is intended to supplement, not replace, human expertise. The firm maintains that professional judgement remains the cornerstone of its service model. Malcolm Gomersall, CEO of Grant Thornton UK, reinforced this perspective, noting, “As questions grow around the role of AI in professional services, it is our fundamental belief that the best technology in the room is still the person sitting across the table. Clients don’t pay for process; they pay for judgement.”

Gomersall further highlighted that the technology is designed to strengthen client outcomes by providing deeper insights and more robust advice, anchored by the firm’s existing experience.

Future Digital Initiatives

The rollout of Claude is part of a larger push toward technology-enabled services. As a follow-up to this deployment, Grant Thornton plans to open a Digital Experience Centre in London later this year. The facility is intended to serve as a collaborative space where clients and firm experts can work together on digital transformation and innovative service delivery.

As professional services firms increasingly navigate the complexities of AI integration, Grant Thornton’s approach underscores a growing industry trend: prioritizing efficiency gains in routine administrative work to bolster the value-added aspects of client engagements.
