The UK’s Financial Reporting Council (FRC) has officially released its Annual Review of Audit Quality (ARAQ) 2026, providing a comprehensive assessment of the audit landscape. While the report highlights a positive trajectory for overall audit performance, it simultaneously identifies significant disparities that continue to challenge the sector.

Key Findings on Audit Quality

The FRC’s latest report emphasizes that Systems of Quality Management (SoQM) serve as the fundamental pillar for consistent audit delivery. According to the regulator, audit quality is trending upward; however, this progress is not uniform across the market. The report identifies a persistent gap between the largest and smallest firms, particularly regarding their capacity to invest in and maintain robust quality management systems.

To address these inconsistencies, the FRC has transitioned to a risk-based, tailored supervisory approach. This model is designed to facilitate organizational learning and foster systemic improvements. Additionally, the regulator is implementing targeted initiatives, such as the Audit and Technology Sandbox, which aim to drive innovation, bolster audit practice capacity, and refine execution processes.

Strategic Importance of Audit Oversight

Anthony Barrett, FRC Supervision executive director, underscored the broader economic significance of these findings, stating: “Audit quality and trust in the audit sector are fundamental to well-functioning markets and confidence in the UK economy. Reliable audits support informed decision-making, strengthen accountability and underpin sustainable growth.”

Barrett further noted that while the ongoing improvements are encouraging, the lack of consistency remains a primary concern. He highlighted that strengthening the internal systems within firms is critical to ensuring that audit quality is delivered reliably across the entire market.

New Metrics for Stakeholder Assessment

In conjunction with the ARAQ 2026, the FRC has released detailed audit company metrics. This data is intended to provide audit committees and other stakeholders with greater transparency into how individual companies define and manage their audit quality standards. By offering this granular insight, the regulator aims to assist decision-makers in evaluating the effectiveness of audit firms and enriching the professional dialogue between auditors and the companies they serve.

The FRC’s latest intervention reflects its ongoing commitment to enhancing market transparency and ensuring that the audit sector remains a reliable support for corporate accountability and sustainable economic development.
