Accounting and professional services firm BDO UK has announced a significant expansion of its summer insight initiatives, opening more than 1,100 places for students across the country. The program is designed to bridge the gap between education and the professional workforce, offering young people exposure to the accountancy sector.
Program Details and Focus
The firm plans to host 20 in-person ‘Insight Days’ between July 7 and July 31. These sessions are open to students aged 16 and older currently enrolled in schools, colleges, or universities. Attendees will be hosted at local BDO offices, where they will participate in a structured curriculum including:
- Interactive workshops focused on professional skills
- Employability training sessions
- Networking opportunities with current staff
- Social impact projects
These sessions will be led by BDO’s first-year trainees, representing the firm’s audit, consulting, deals, outsourcing, risk, and tax divisions. By leveraging early-career staff to lead the programs, BDO aims to provide students with relatable perspectives on the transition from academic life to a corporate environment.
Addressing Structural Barriers
The expansion is part of a broader corporate agenda at BDO to promote social mobility and diversity within the accountancy profession. The firm’s initiative is informed by its recent report, Young Minds 2026: The Unequal Advantage, which highlighted that students from lower socio-economic backgrounds frequently face systemic disadvantages, including a lack of access to professional networks and early work experience.
Louise Sayers, head of People, Culture and Purpose at BDO, noted that the transition to the workplace can be daunting for students who lack existing family or personal connections within the industry. “These Insight Days are designed to help young people better understand the opportunities available to them, build confidence and meet people who have already started their careers in the profession,” Sayers stated.
Historical Context of BDO Initiatives
The latest expansion represents a scaling up of BDO’s previous efforts to improve representation and career access. Over the past five years, the firm has operated targeted programs such as its ‘Explore BDO’ and ‘Black Heritage’ initiatives. According to company data, more than 250 students have participated in these specific diversity-focused programs to date, with the most recent intake providing over 200 places.
The announcement of the expanded summer scheme follows other recent organizational developments at the firm, including the appointment of Syreeta Brown as an independent non-executive director last month.
